Gardenburger President Resigns
August 9, 2000
PORTLAND, Ore.--Gardenburger Inc. [NASDAQ:GBUR] president and chief executive officer (CEO), Lyle Hubbard, resigned after almost five years with the company. Along with his resignation, he relinquished his seat on the board of directors.
According to GBUR, while Hubbard was at the helm, sales doubled. The company also reported that under his direction, the brand gained market share leadership in the main channels for grocery, food service, natural grocery and club stores. A spokesperson from GBUR's board of directors said Hubbard's strong marketing strategies succeeded in "branding the category."
Though he was a catalyst for success, his family life became more important. "While I greatly care about the company and all its stakeholders, I am looking forward to spending more time with my family," Hubbard said. "I am proud of our return to positive operating income. I believe in Gardenburger's ability to reach the next level of growth and profitability."
The company has enlisted the services of an executive search firm to find Hubbard's replacement. Until then, James W. Linford, senior vice president of supply chain and operations, will serve as interim president and CEO. Linford was the "obvious choice" for the interim role. He spearheaded the development of the flame-grilling process that created the Gardenburger Flame Grilled veggie patties, which are currently best-sellers in certain markets.
"[Linford's] achievements at Gardenburger and his experience at other major food makers make him exceptionally well prepared for this interim leadership role," said a company spokesperson.
"Considerable opportunities remain for providing a variety of great tasting, healthy meatless foods, and making them available everywhere," said Linford.
