ADM Reports Changes in Soy Production, Pizza-Worthy Ingredients

DECATUR, Ill.--Archer Daniels Midland Co. (ADM)announced it is constructing a soy processing facility in Shanhaiguan, China, inpartnership with Wilmar Holdings. Construction is scheduled to be completed by2004, and the facility will produce ADM's Arcon line of soy proteinconcentrates, specialty soy flour for soy sauce fermentation and whole ediblesoybeans.

"The construction of this facility strategically enhancesour position in fulfilling the region's need for both animal and vegetableproteins," said Brian Peterson, senior vice president of corporate affairs."Our Arcon functional soy protein concentrates will offer Chinese and otherPacific Rim meat processors functional value unsurpassed by any other vegetableprotein source available."

In additional company news, ADM reported it has permanentlyclosed its soybean processing facility located in Fredonia, Kan., which wasacquired in 1928. The closure is part of ADM's review of its manufacturingassets.

ADM also reported its range of flours, dough conditioners, andvegetable fats and oils is well-suited for pizza manufacturers. The company hasalso developed food ingredients that provide health benefits, including a rangeof soy ingredients, fats and oils with low trans fatty acids, and othernutraceutical ingredients for potential use in pizza applications.
