GAITHERSBURG, Md.--AOAC International announced the creation of a new working group and issued a call for methods. David Lakey, president of Cardinal Nutrition, will serve as the chair of the AOAC Working Group on MSM, which was created to oversee the development and validation of a standardized analytical method(s) for MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). A complete list of working group members is available online (www.aoac.org/msm).

The working group is seeking analytical methods for review that will identify the compound in raw materials and finished products, including multi-component formulations, as well as quantify total MSM and any impurities. To be considered, methods must be submitted by Jan. 31, 2006. After an initial screening by the working group, selected methods will be evaluated by an expert review panel and subsequently evaluated in a validation study.

Methods can be submitted to both Al Pohland ([email protected]) and Jennifer Diatz ([email protected]). Further questions on the MSM Working Group should be directed to Anita Mishra, (301) 924-7077, ext. 131, [email protected].
