TOMS RIVER, N.J.New research in Integrative Medicine: A Clinician's Journal found bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) supplementation improved pain, stiffness and quality of life in osteoarthritis (OA) patients.

In the randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study, 87 OA patients received either 150 mg of BMP (asCyplexinol® from study sponsor ZyCal Bioceuticals Inc.) or placebo for 12 weeks. Researchers measured pain, stiffness and quality of life using Western Ontario and McMaster University (WOMAC) Osteoarthritis Index at baseline, week six and week 12.

BMP-supplementing participants experienced significant improvements in pain, stiffness and quality of life after just one week. Pain decreased by 3.35 points at week 12, compared to the placebo group's .35-point increase in pain. The BMP group also noted a 2.95-point improvement in stiffness (compared to .18-point improvement), and 3.12-point boost in quality of life (compared to .40-point decrease).
