Collagen Drink Improves Skin, Bone, Joint Health
ALLENDALE, N.J.--LaneLabs recently announcedresults of two studies. The first involved Toki, a collagen replacement drinkdistributed by the company that was shown to reduce the appearance of wrinklesand age spots, as well as alleviate back and joint pain. The study was printedin the Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism (20:298-302, 2002).Researchers, led by Takuo Fujita, M.D., of the Katsuragi Hospital and theCalcium Research Institute in Osaka, Japan, randomly assigned 80 subjects totake either the drink or placebo for four months. At the end of the study, inaddition to improved appearance and lessened back and joint pain, subjects inthe treatment group also exhibited improved bone density.
Toki contains absorbable algal calcium (AAACa), collagen, andhyaluronic and dermatanic acids. The ingredients are modified with 47 aminoacids and minerals from Hijiki seaweed to promote absorption, according toLaneLabs (www.lanelabs.com).
The second study involved MGN3, a patented formula of ricebran hydrolyzed with Shiitake mushroom extracts marketed by LaneLabs. In vitroresearch out of Drew University of Medicine and Science in Los Angelesdemonstrated an increase in the efficacy of chemotherapy against certain cancercells in the presence of MGN3. Researchers concluded their results indicatedcomplementary treatment with MGN3 and traditional medicine may lead to areduction in the amount of chemotherapy necessary to induce cancer cell death.These preliminary results have warranted further testing in humans undergoingchemotherapy, according to LaneLabs, which plans to conduct clinical research.
