BENICIA, Calif.—Undenatured (intact) type II collagen (as UC-II®, from InterHealth Nutraceuticals Inc.) relieves pain in osteoarthritic dogs more than twice as effectively than glucosamine and chondroitin alone, according to a study from Murray State University (Ky.) and presented at the annual meeting of the Society of Toxicology in March 2006 in San Diego.

In the canine study, UC-II taken alone reduced overall pain by 62 percent, painful limb movement by 91 percent and lameness by 78 percent. UC-II plus glucosamine and chondroitin reduced overall pain by 57 percent, and pain with limb movement and lameness each by 53 percent, compared to the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin alone, which reduced overall pain, pain with limb movement and lameness by 24 percent, 29 percent and 39 percent, respectively. No adverse effects or changes in liver, heart or kidney functions were observed in any of the animals included in the study.

“The results of this new study provide further proof of UC-II’s benefits for anyone seeking relief from joint problems for themselves or for their companion animals,” said Manashi Bagchi, Ph.D., senior scientist with InterHealth (www.interhealthusa.com).
