KANSARI, IndiaBoswellia serrata extract (as WOKVEL®, from Verdure Sciences Corp.) decreased Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores compared to valdecoxib, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), over a seven-month period. Participants in the six-month, randomized, prospective, comparative study were assessed using the WOMAC scale each month, and then assessed at seven months after baseline after a one-month washout. An overall decrease in WOMAC values, which marked an increase in joint health and function, were observed each monththrough six months after baseline for both WOKVEL and valdecoxib. After the one-month washout, WOMAC scores for the WOKVEL Extract group remained lowwhile scores for valdecoxib increased back to near-baseline values. According to researchers, results indicate WOKVEL (www.wokvel.com) offers a sustained joint health effect, which may be related to prior reports on the functional cellular processes important for inflammatory reactions by boswellic acids (Curr Med Chem. 13, 28:3359-69, 2006). The current study was published in the Indian Journal of Pharmacology (39, 1: 27-29, 2007).
