U.K. Food, Drink Exports Surge

LONDON Research commissioned by the Food and Drink Federation (FDF) reveals that U.K. exports of food and non-alcoholic drinks have hit record levels, boosted by strong performances in all product categories and a growing taste for British products in Central European countries.

According to FDF, exports were worth £9.23 billion in 2008, up 20 percent in value to the prior year. When alcoholic beveragesnotably Scotch Whiskyare included, exports hit £13.6 billion.

Overall performance was boosted by a buoyant red meat sector, recovering after the lifting of foot and mouth restrictions; strong exports of commodity cereals; and another strong year for fish and seafood companies who recorded overseas sales worth £1 billion despite tough market conditions.
