Hormone Free Dairy Product Claims Prove False

ROCKVILLE, Md.--Four manufacturers of dairyproducts, that included whole milk, reduced fat milk and ice cream, were issuedwarning letters in early September by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) tocorrect false claims on their product labels. The labels, proclaiming theproducts have No Hormones or are Hormone Free are false because allmilk contains naturally occurring hormones, and milk cannot be processed in amanner that renders it free of hormones, according to FDA. The agency addedthis makes them misbranded under section 403(a) of the Federal Food, Drug andCosmetic Act.

Manufacturers were also warned that FDA (www.fda.gov) could seek furtheraction, such as seizure and/or injunction, if they did not take prompt actionto correct their labels.
