Intertek Cantox Hosts S/F Claims Symposium

BRIDGEWATER, N.J.The substantiation standard for structure/function (S/F) claims lacks guidance, especially when it comes to defining competent and reliable scientific evidence," according to Intertek Cantox. Further, the company said the substantiation standard to be applied to S/F claims on foods is not defined.

S/F claims can strengthen a companys product image and permit an organization to have a more competitive marketing advantage, globally. However, claims used in the labeling and advertising of foods must be in compliance with scientific and regulatory requirements

To help clarify the substantiation and enforcement of S/F claims on food and dietary supplements, Intertek Cantox is hosting  is hosting a one-day symposium on Nov. 2, 2011, in Arlington, VA, at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City. Intertek Cantox will present deficiencies in the regulations and guidance documents pertaining to S/F claims and will host regulators to shed light on the matter

During this Symposium, representatives from both FDA and FTC will explain what the S/F claim substantiation standard means, identify how the S/F claim standards should be applied to dietary supplements and foods and discuss enforcement action triggers.

The symposium will benefit scientific, regulatory, or marketing personnel involved with S/F claims on foods or dietary supplements," said Ashley Roberts, senior vice president of Intertek Cantoxs food and nutrition group. This is a unique opportunity for attendees to have pressing questions addressed directly by FDA and FTC.
