WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.Protein powder and drinks were the subject of the latest product review from ConsumerLab.com, which tested products marketed for sports nutrition, dieting and meal replacement. The majority of the 20 products tested passed with no problems. Two protein supplements were contaminated with lead, between 6 to 18 mcg in a daily serving; a third product contained 4 g more sugar per serving than labeled. ConsumerLab also tested products for melamine, a cheap substitute for protein, and found no trace of it in any of the products.

ConsumerLab includes the names of companies involved in the reviews in its general news releases, but doesnt indicate which ones passed or failed testing, nor the levels of active ingredients in the products. However, the reports with complete findings are available for purchase from ConsumerLab.

The report on protein powders and drinks provides findings for 17 supplements randomly selected for testing, as well as three additional products that passed the same testing under ConsumerLab.coms Voluntary Certification Program, whereby companies can pay to have their products tested by ConsumerLab. It also includes information on the various types of proteins in such products, including whey, soy and rice protein.
