BaCognize® PromotesCognitive Health

CORVALLIS, Ore.An extract of Bacopamonnieri (as BaCognize®, from Geni Herbs), an Indianperennial plant used in the Ayurvedic medicine, may improve cognitive healththrough its effect on serotonin receptors, according to a clinical trialpresented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Pharmacognosy in Julyat Oregon State University.

In the study, the herbal extract displaced antagonist[3H]Ketanserin from serotonin receptor 5HT2a isolated from rats, exhibited evenstronger effects in its displacement of agonist 8-OH-DPAT from the 5HT1areceptor, and decreased cAMP production in cells with 5HT1a receptors, suggesting it causes an agonistic effect.

The researchers recommended future studies to identify thespecific compounds responsible for the in vitro pharmacology observed in thestudy.
