Dietary Fiber Intake May Prevent Type II Diabetes
BOSTON--Diets that contain high glycemic index (GI) foods and lowamounts of dietary fiber may put women at risk of developing Type II diabetes,according to a study out of the Harvard School of Public Health. Published in TheAmerican Journal of Clinical Nutrition (80, 2:348-56, 2004) (www.ajcn.org),the new study investigated the association between glycemic index and dietaryfiber, and the risk of developing Type II diabetes.
Researchers reviewed investigated food-frequency dietary information fromover 90,000 women who were followed for eight years. Glycemic index wassignificantly associated with an increased risk of developing Type II diabetes,while cereal fiber intake decreased the risk. The researchers concluded dietshigh in rapidly absorbed carbs, with lower fiber intake, increase the risk ofdeveloping Type II diabetes.
