Digestive Enzymes Aid Digestion, Increase NutrientAbsorption

FORSYTH, Mo.Supplemental digestive enzymes from National Enzyme Co.(NEC) may help food digestion and increase nutrient absorption, according to thecompany.

Using NECs patented gastrointestinal model (TIM), researchers tested theenzyme blend in four different situations: a perfect digestive system with andwithout enzymes, and an imperfect digestive system with and without enzymes.Researchers from TNO Nutrition and Food Research in Zeist, The Netherlands,found even with the perfect digestive system, the enzymes increased thebioaccessibility of free glucose by a factor of four, which, according to NEC,is significant, because it was not expecting to find any significant digestionenhancement; in the imperfect digestive model, enzymes increased bioaccessiblityof carbohydrates by a factor of seven and doubled proteins bioavailability.This research is the first quantitative evidence that proves the efficacy ofsupplemental digestive enzymes on the digestibility of proteins andcarbohydrates, according to NEC.
