CATANIA, ItalyResaerchers from University of Catania reported their tests on six probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus  (L. rhamnosus) strains showed all six were able to survive in the human upper gastrointestinal tract. Using a dynamic gastric model of digestion, they delivered the probiotics in MRS broth and tested survival during in vitro gastric and gastric plus duodenal digestion. All tested strains showed good survival rate during both gastric and duodenal digestion, with three strains exhibiting recovery percentages in the range of 117 to 276 percent. Further, high lactic acid production was detected for all strains, confirming their metabolic activity during digestion. The results were publiched in the December issue of Food Microbiology (2010;27(8):1121-7).
