Allium Vegetables Seem To Reduce Prostate Cancer Risk

SHANGHAI, China--An analysis of dietary habits in Shanghaiindicated a high intake of allium vegetables significantly lowered the risk ofprostate cancer, according to a study that appeared in the Nov. 6 issue of the Journalof the National Cancer Institute (94, 21:1648-51, 2002) (http://jncicancerspectrum.oupjournals.org).Researchers from the Shanghai Cancer Institute conducted in-person interviewswith 238 case subjects who had prostate cancer and 471 men without cancer. Menwhose dietary habits placed them in the highest intakes of total alliumvegetables (including garlic, scallions, onions, chives and leeks) had nearly a50-percent lower risk of cancer than those in the lowest intake group.
