Applications for Fermented Papaya

NEW YORKFermented papaya can help control immune function and inflammation, as well as limit oxidative stress damage, proving potentially useful in health issues such as Alzheimers, thalassemia, cirrhosis, diabetes and aging. A multinational research team investigated the potential applications of supplementation with a fermented papaya preparation (FPP) and published their findings in the Nov. 28 issue of Toxicology journal (2010;278(1):6-16).

Derived from yeast fermentation of Carica papaya Linn, FPP may modulate beta-amyloid toxicity in brain cells, as well as oxidative stress pathways activated by pro-inflammatory cytokines. They further reported FPP reduces DNA damage from free radicals, including hydrogen peroxide. They noted inflammation and DNA damage are key factors in a variety of cancers, diabetes, arthritis, cardiovascular dysfunctions, neurodegenerative disorders (such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease), exercise physiology (including performance sports) and aging. They concluded the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and immunostimulatory properties exhibited by FPP may make it an ideal food/nutraceutical supplement for management of these conditions .
