NEW YORKA recent blog in the New York Times determined most studies suggest devils claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) from 50 mg to 100 mg is effective at treating back pain.

The sited a study (Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2006 Apr 19;(2):CD004504) where scientists found it worked better than placebo and was just as effective as about 12.5 mg of Vioxx when taken daily. They pointed to another study (Rheumatology 2003; 42: 141-148) that shows devils claw is safe for short-term treatment of about eight to 12 weeks.

However, they warned side effects can include stomach upset, low blood pressure and increased heartbeat; and patients who take blood thinners should avoid it.
