Garlic May Improve Prostate Health

ANKARA, Turkey--Garlic supplements appear to haveseveral benefits in prostate health, according to a study printed in theFebruary issue of Nutrition Research (23, 2:199-204, 2003) (www.elsevier.com/locate/issn/02715317).Researchers at Ankara University recruited 27 patients with benign prostatichyperplasia (BPH) and nine patients with prostate cancer, all of whom were givena daily aqueous garlic extract supplement in doses of 1 mL/kg of body weight.After one month of supplementation, prostate mass was significantly reduced inthe BPH patients, although no effect on prostate mass was seen in the cancerpatients. Both groups exhibited improved urinary parameters, including decreasedfrequency and increased flow rates. In addition, the cancer patients alsoexhibited reduced total and free prostate specific antigen (PSA) values.Researchers concluded garlic extract supplementation leads to significantimprovement in disease parameters for patients with BPH and prostate cancer.
