Numerous factors are impacting today’s market for skin care supplements, including a generational shift among consumers, increased focus on health versus appearance and technological advancements. According to a recent survey of 480 consumers of skin care products in France and the U.K. commissioned by Lycored, younger consumers are more likely to have used an ingestible skin care product. Additionally, the reasons supporting consumers’ decisions to use skin care supplements are less motivated by appearance and more based on health. Naturalness, affordability and efficacy are other important considerations for consumers looking for skin care supplements.
Personalization and technology are expected to increasingly impact innovation within the skin care category. Regarding personalization, Transparency Market Research suggests the market potential for personalized skin care products is high in Europe and North America, especially in the U.K. and the United States. Personalized innovations are emerging, such as L’Oreal’s My UV Patch wearable skin sensor—unveiled in 2016—which is designed to help consumers monitor and educate themselves about sun exposure and protection.
