MINEOLA, N.Y.In a recent study published in Urology, 91 percent of women with recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) remained symptom-free while supplementing with UTI-Stat® (with ProAntinox®), a cranberry liquid supplement from Medical Nutrition USA Inc. (April 10, 2010). The study also found UTI-Stat significantly improved quality of life.

UTI-Stat was administered orally at 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75 mL/d for 12 weeks to 28 (23 analyzable) women, 38 to 59 years of age, with a history of at least three UTIs in less than six months. The secondary endpoints demonstrated only two (9.1 percent) of 23 reported a rUTI, a markedly better rate than the historical data. At 12 weeks, the reduction in worry about rUTIs and increased quality of life with regard to the physical functioning domain and role limitations from physical health domain, as measured by the Medical Outcomes Study short-form 36-item questionnaire, were significant (P=0.0097). A lower American Urological Association Symptom Index indicating greater quality of life was also significant (P=.045).

The novel concentrated cranberry liquid blend showed a good safety profile and tolerability in both pre- and postmenopausal women with history of rUTIs. The secondary endpoints demonstrated its effectiveness in reducing the incidence of rUTI and increasing quality of life. Given this evidence, supplementation might be beneficial in the prevention of rUTIs in this population, the researchers concluded.

"Results showed UTI-Stat had a good safety profile and tolerability, and demonstrated effectiveness in significantly reducing the anticipated incidence of recurrent UTI and improving quality of life in females with a history of UTI," said Aaron E. Katz, Ph.D., professor of clinical urology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and director of the Center for Holistic Urology.

UTI-Stat is currently used in many nursing homes and hospitals, where the incidence of UTIs is higher than in the general public. A 2008 study of 88 nursing home residents with recurrent UTI showed that 92 percent remained symptom-free while taking UTI-Stat.

ProAntinox is also available over-the-counter as Cystex® Cranberry.
