CoQ10 Safe at High Doses

OSAKA, JapanCoenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is safe and well-tolerated inhealthy adults at doses of up to 900 mg/d, according to a study published in RegulatoryToxicology and Pharmacology on Jan. 23 online ahead of print(www.sciencedirect.com).

In the double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, researchersadministered 300, 600 or 900 mg/d of CoQ10 (as Kaneka Q10, from Kaneka Corp[www.kaneka.com]) or placebo to 88 healthy volunteers for four weeks. No seriousadverse events were observed in any group. Adverse events such as cold symptoms and mild gastrointestinal complaintswere reported in 16 volunteers with placebo, in 12 volunteers with the 300 mgdose, in 20 volunteers with the 600 mg dose and in 16 volunteers with the 900 mgdose. However, the events exhibited no dosedependency and were judged to have norelationship to the active treatment. In addition, changes observed inhematology, blood biochemistry and urinalysis were not dose-related and werejudged clinically insignificant. Test subjects plasma CoQ10 concentrationafter an eightmonth withdrawal period was almost the same as that beforeadministration. The researchers concluded these findings showed Kaneka Q10 waswell-tolerated and safe for healthy adults at an intake of up to 900 mg/d.
