MASHHAD, IranSupplementing with 1 g/d of curcumin for 30 days led to a significant reduction in serum triglycerides, in a recent study published in Phytotherapy Research (2012 May 21. DOI: 10.1002/ptr.4715). The researchers used Sabinsa's Curcumin C3 Complex® with the natural bioavailability-enhancer BioPerine® in this placebo-controlled, randomized double-blind clinical trial with 30 participants.
High triglyceride levels is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and is also a common feature of obesity. Curcumin, a bioactive phytochemical found in the popular Indian spice turmeric, has well-known antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties.
After a month of supplementation with Curcumin C3 Complex, serum triglycerides were significantly reduced compared to placebo (P=0.009). Curcuminoids were not found to affect serum levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, (HDL) high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP). Weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, hip circumference, arm circumference and body fat also remained statistically unchanged by the end of trial.
A study from 2006 found Curcumin C3 Complex® could boost the bodys ability to clear the build up of plaque in the brain that is linked to Alzheimers disease, and a 2009 study reported dietary curcumin may have a potential benefit in preventing obesity.
