DHA May Raise LDL Cholesterol

LONDONA daily intake of 0.7 g ofdocosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was found to increase levels of LDL cholesterol inmiddle-aged men and women (Am J Clin Nutr,79, 4:558-63, 2004) (www.ajcn.org). Researchers from St. Thomas Hospitalfound DHA supplementation in 38 men and women between the ages of 40 and 65increased DHA plasma concentration as well as values for total serumcholesterol, LDL and plasma apolipoprotein B. These findings led them toconclude DHA may down-regulate the expression of the LDL receptor.
