Fortified Orange Juice May Lower Cholesterol

MINNEAPOLISConsuming two 8fluid oz. servings of Minute Maid Premium Heart Wise orangejuice daily for eight weeks lowered total and LDL cholesterol levels in peoplewith normal to borderline high total cholesterol, according to a recentclinical, unpublished study. The juice contains Corowise plant sterols (www.corowise.com), manufactured by Cargill Health & Food Technologies, thatinhibit the absorption of cholesterol. One 8-oz. serving contains 1 g ofCorowise plant sterols; according to Cargill, an intake of 0.8 g/d of plant sterols aspart of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heartdisease, as elevated LDL cholesterol is a major risk factor.
