Long-Term Vitamin E Seems To Prevent Bladder Cancer Mortality

ATLANTA--Long-term vitamin E supplementation mayreduce the risk of bladder cancer mortality, according to research published inthe Dec. 1 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology (156,11:1002-10, 2002) (http://aje.oupjournals.org).Investigators from the American Cancer Society examined the association betweenuse of individual vitamin C and vitamin E supplements and bladder cancermortality among 991,522 U.S. subjects enrolled in the Cancer Prevention Study IIcohort. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire at enrollmentin 1982 and were followed through 1998. During follow-up, 1,289 bladder cancerdeaths occurred. While researchers did not find an association for vitamin C usefor any duration, regular vitamin E supplementation for 10 years was associatedwith a reduced risk of bladder cancer mortality.
