Sigma-Tau Forms U.S.Holding Company

GAITHERSBURG, Md.--Sigma-Tau Group in Rome formed Sigma-Tau, a U.S. holding company for its three U.S. companies located here--Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals Inc., Sigma-Tau HealthScience Inc. and Sigma-Tau Research Inc. The U.S. companies will continue their work in the research and marketing of carnitine, which they have conducted since Sigma-Tau Group established U.S. commercial operations in 1989.

Sigma-Tau Pharmaceuticals primarily focuses on development and production of "orphan" drugs and is headed by Kenneth Mehrling, chief operating officer (COO). Sigma-Tau Research develops compounds for clinical indications, such as cardiovascular disease, and is overseen by Paolo Carminati, M.D., COO. Sigma-Tau HealthScience has two divisions, Consumer Products and Fine Chemicals (supplier of Biosint Carnitines™ and online at www.biosintcarnitines.com); Pietro Pola, Ph.D., is the COO of this group.
