Soy Lowers Risk of Prostate Cancer

ST. LOUISConsumption of soyfoods may fight cancer of the prostate, according to results of a meta-analysispublished in the (International Journal of Cancer (117,4:667-69, 2005).

Lin Yan, director of cancer research at The Solae Co., andEdward Spitznagel, Ph.D., professor of mathematics at Washington Universityconducted a thorough search for epidemiologic studies of soy and prostatecancer, and identified two cohort and six case-control studies that metappropriate criteria for inclusion. Using a random-effects model, analysis ofthese studies yielded an overall risk estimate of 0.70. No publication bias wasdetected. The researchers concluded results of the analysis showed consumptionof soy food was associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer in men.
