Study Finds Pantethine Supplementation Lowers Cholesterol
A recent study found that, when compared to a placebo, pantethine (Pantesin Pantethine by Daiichi Fine Chemical Co.) lowered overall cholesterol in healthy participants.

A recent study found that pantethine (Pantesin Pantethine by Daiichi Fine Chemical Co., Ltd.) was effective in lowering cardiovascular risk markers in participants with low to moderate risk factors (Nutr Res. 2011 Aug;31(8):608-15). When compared to the placebo, pantethine, a biologically active derivative of vitamin B5, showed an 11 percent decline in LDL-cholesterol, 7 percent decline in non-HDL cholesterol and a total 6 percent decline in overall cholesterol.
The triple-blind study had 120 participants that were randomized to receive either pantethine or a nonbiologically active placebo. The group taking pantethine saw a significant and sustained reduction in total cholesterol. The study also found that pantethine supplementation for 16 weeks (600 mg/d for weeks 1-8 then 900 mg/d for weeks 9-16) is safe and effectively lowers total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol over diet alone.
