FDA Questions GMO Labeling

WASHINGTON--On Nov. 29, six companies were sent letters inregard to genetically modified (GM) food labeling that was inconsistent with theFood and Drug Administration's (FDA) Draft Guidance document, "Guidance forIndustry Voluntary Labeling Indicating Whether Foods Have or Have Not BeenDeveloped Using Bioengineering." The companies that were affected wereB&G Foods Inc., Parsippany, N.J.; Hain Celestial Group, Uniondale, N.Y.;Healthy Times, Poway, Calif.; Spectrum Organic Products, Petaluma, Calif.; andU.S. Mills Inc., Needham, Mass.

The letters, signed by John Foret, director of the Division of Compliance andEnforcement at the Center for Food Safety and Nutrition (CFSAN), pointed outeach company's "misleading" statements and asked that the companiesbring their products into FDA compliance.
