Applied Food Sciences Receives U.S. Patent

AUSTIN, TexasApplied FoodSciences LLC was granted U.S. Patent No. 6,602,527, Processing method for manufacturingblack tea and an improved black tea, covering a process to convert fresh tealeaves, or green tea, into a healthier, antioxidant-rich black tea. According toAFS, the process results in black tea rich in theaflavin antioxidants that canbe used in beverage or nutraceutical applications. Theaflavins have a vastamount of scientific support providing evidence of their health benefits inregard to cholesterol reduction, skin damage protection and antioxidantcapacity, to name a few, said Loretta Zapp, chief executive officer (CEO) ofAFS (www.appliedfoods.com). The issuance of AFS newest patent provides uswith the ability to produce a proprietary, enriched theaflavin extract for thenutritional supplement industry.
