OMRI Releases Materials, Products Lists for NOP Compliance

EUGENE, Ore.--The Organic Materials ReviewInstitute (OMRI) announced its newest OMRI Generic Materials List and OMRI BrandName Products List, which are intended to help organic farmers and processorsadhere to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Organic Program (NOP).As of Oct. 21, 2002, the NOP will require full labeling compliance for organicproducts.

According to OMRI, farmers and processors who already work inthe organic industry may be required to make substantial changes to theiroperations to comply with the new federal regulations. The new lists includerecent updates and information for growers, ranchers and processors on organicingredients, farm inputs and other supply-chain regulations.

"These lists represent the definitive and easy guides tocompliance with the new federal law," said Bill Wolf, board president atOMRI (www.omri.org). "Growers need tounderstand that all products listed on the OMRI publications fall intocompliance with regulations they will need to follow under the NOP. Just asimportant, products and ingredients that do not appear on the lists, though theymay have been used in the past, will no longer be acceptable for use, accordingto the new federal regulations."
