Red Clover Isoflavones Beneficial for MaintainingCholesterol

BERLIN--Findings reported at the 10th World Congress on theMenopause, held here on June 14, confirmed previous results that women who takered clover isoflavones experience improvements in acute symptoms of menopausesuch as hot flashes. Arturo Jeri, M.D., of the Institute of Gynecology andReproduction in Lima, Peru, conducted a double blind, placebo-controlled trialinvolving 100 menopausal women with elevated cholesterol. The women in thetreatment group (taking PromensilTM, a redclover isoflavone formula manufactured by Stamford, Conn.-based Novogen Ltd.)maintained cholesterol levels more effectively than the women taking placebo, and the treatment was also found to improve symptoms of menopause.

"This is an exciting study that gives further support to the linkbetween red clover isoflavone supplements, such as Promensil and RimostilTM,and the maintenance of cardiovascular health in post-menopausal women,"Jeri said. "As women age and estrogen levels decline, their so-called'good' [high-density lipoprotein] cholesterol levels fall. Therefore womenshould be looking for ways of maintaining healthy cholesterol levels during andafter menopause. These research findings indicate that in addition to managingacute symptoms of menopause, long-term use of Promensil would help women tomaintain healthy cholesterol levels."
