Starting June 8, Watson Inc. will begin a Facebook campaign to alleviate summer hunger through donations to the Connecticut Food Bank. Watson will donate $1 for every “page like" it receives on its Facebook page, up to 2,500 page likes, or $2,500 dollars. Once the goal of $2,500 is reached, the campaign will be successfully completed. A second campaign is also being planned for the fall of 2015. For every $1 donated, Connecticut Food Bank can distribute $4 worth of food at wholesale value.
Shortly after the campaign’s start, Ingredion Incorporated will sponsor a scientific session, “Reducing the Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: Improved Carbohydrate Metabolism with Resistant Starch," at DNSG 2015 – 33rd International Symposium on Diabetes and Nutrition, on June 11. The meeting will bring together top scientists, physicians and dieticians to showcase the latest research on the nutritional aspects of diabetes prevention and treatment. The session, chaired by Christine Pelkman, Ph.D., senior nutrition scientist and clinical research manager at Ingredion Incorporated, will highlight the work of four scientists exploring the benefits of resistant starch on carbohydrate metabolism. The researchers will review their investigations of the glycemic effects of HI-MAIZE® 260, a specific type of resistant starch derived from a high-amylose maize (HAM-RS).
Then, Pharma Technology Inc. (PTI) plans to debut its enhanced PharmaFlex iSeries Deduster at the ACHEMA World Forum, June 15 to 19, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The latest model features several upgrades over its predecessor, including an output increased by up to 20 percent, a more efficient dedusting process, and enhanced resistance to prolonged heat, alcohol and industrial detergents exposure. The PharmaFlex iSeries Deduster also offers all innovations available with the original PharmaFlex range of Dedusters.
Meanwhile, CRN will host a free webinar for pharmacists and nurse practitioners (NPs) on June 16. CRN’s webinar will feature integrative medicine expert Tieraona Low Dog, M.D., as the presenter, and it will be presented exclusively to pharmacist and NP members of Skipta, a network of specialized online medical communities for verified healthcare professionals. During this one-hour webinar, “Incorporating Herbal Supplements into Your Practice: The Science and Regulations Behind Five Popular Botanicals," Low Dog will share science-based information about the clinical use of turmeric, butterbur, elderberry, hibiscus, and peppermint. Low Dog will also give an overview of the regulations that help ensure the quality and safety of herbal products, including mandatory good manufacturing practices (GMPs) that call for appropriate product and ingredient testing, among many other requirements.
To help promote information on probiotics and omega-3s, the U.S.-China Health Products Association organized the China International Probiotic and Omega-3 Industry Summit, which will take place on June 23. The conference, to be held at the Marriott Renaissance Yu Garden Hotel in Shanghai, China, will bring the industry together to share valuable information on these increasingly popular ingredients. The timing is strategic, as it is the day before the FiAsia /CPHI /NPC Expo, held June 24 to 26 in Shanghai. For international companies, this event provides an opportunity to attend an informational conference followed by three days visiting the Expo.
On the same day (June 23), DSM will also present on new webinar on vitamin E’s latest research findings, as well as implications on recommended intakes. The company’s Manfred Eggersdorfer, senior vice president, nutrition science and advocacy, and professor of healthy ageing at University Medical Center Groningen, and Jacob Bauly, global marketing manager, will join Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D, senior scientist and director, Tufts University, to present the findings.
At a recent June 2015 event, Omega Protein Corporation welcomed Virginia’s governor, Terry McAuliffe, to Reedville, Virginia, where McAuliffe issued a proclamation that the Commonwealth's 2015 allowable menhaden harvest will be set at 158,700 metric tons. The event was held at 9 a.m. at the site of Reedville's historic smokestack. The proclamation follows a May decision by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) to increase the allowable coastwide menhaden harvest by 10 percent.
