IFT Expands Its Government Role

WASHINGTON--The Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) created a new office to advocate the scientific perspective on food science and technology issues. The Office of Science, Communications and Government Relations, located here, will involve IFT members to enhance IFT's role in government programs and policies.

Three departments will make up this new office. The Dept. of Science and Government Relations will promote IFT as a scientific government liaison; the Dept. of Science and Technology Projects will work with international food problems and create partnerships with government agencies; the Chicago-based Dept. of Science and Communications will promote food science and technology at the public level.

OnAug. 1, Dr. Stephanie Smith began her tenure as the director of science andgovernment relations in the new Washington office. Smith was most recently vicepresident of scientific and regulatory affairs at the National ConfectionersAssociation. For additional information, visit www.ift.org.
