Russians to Test Domestic GM Potato

MOSCOW--Russian scientists are conducting tests on a genetically modifiedpotato, the first Russian modified crop variety, said an official from theRussian Academy of Sciences' Bioengineering Center. The potato variety, which isresistant to the Colorado potato beetle, may be used in Russia if the testresults are successful. It is expected that the potato's resistance may helpincrease potato yields since half of Russian potato crops were damaged last yearby the beetle. The center is also planning to develop GM sunflower, rice andwheat varieties.
