CLEARFIELD, Utah--Ferrous bis-glycine chelate isan appropriate choice for fortifying milk with iron, according to research fromAlbion Advanced Nutrition. Fortifying milk with the chelate (as Ferrochel, manufactured by Albion) did not alter the milk's organoleptic properties. Inaddition, it was proven to be well-tolerated among children. A total of 131children aged 6 to 14 years consumed 1 L/d of milk fortified with 30 mg of theiron chelate for three months. After the study period, the prevalence of anemiadropped significantly from 25.3 percent to 5 percent among boys and from 23percent to 9.6 percent among girls. Researchers concluded that ferrousbis-glycine chelate in milk improved hemoglobin and ferritin serum levels amonganemic children, suggesting milk is an appropriate vehicle for fortification.
