Inulin Accepted as Meat Products Ingredient

WASHINGTON--Frutafit's inulin product, a natural food ingredient made from chicory, has been accepted for use in meat products in the United States. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Department of Agriculture (USDA) have officially recognized it as an accepted ingredient for between two and five percent of a product.
Imperial Sensus, which markets inulin, is a joint venture between the Dutch company Cosun-Sensus and Sugar Land, Texas-based Imperial Sugar Corporation. Its vice president of sales and marketing, Pam Galvin, said, "Frutafit is the only inulin that has been reviewed by the FDA and USDA for use in meat and poultry products." It has been used in European meat and poultry applications in the past. Those applications include beef patties, frankfurters, sausages, poultry and pates. Low-fat versions of the products are also suitable for inulin.
