PC May Enhance Lycopene Absorption
SAPPORO, JapanDietaryphosphatidylcholine (PC) may increase the bodys absorption of lycopene, butdecrease that of alpha-tocopherol, according to a study published in the August Journalof Nutrition (134:1862-66, 2004) (www.nutrition.org).
Researchers conducted three experiments in male rats toexamine the effects of PC on lycopene and alpha-tocopherol absorption.
Compared to control rats, those receiving PC had significantlygreater uptake of concomitant lycopene; however, when PC was given withalpha-tocopherol, it appeared to inhibit uptake of the vitamin E isomer.
