Cargill Supplies Trehalose for Sports Drink

WOODBRIDGE, N.J., & MINNEAPOLIS--PacificHealthLaboratories Inc. and Cargill Inc. entered into a strategic alliance to launch aready-to-drink version of PacificHealth's sports product, ACCELERADE. Cargillis supplying Ascend, its branded trehalose, a naturally occurring sugar thatis about 45 percent as sweet as sucrose. Until now, ACCELERADE was onlyavailable in powder form.

"The Ascend brand of trehalose offers advantages in termsof flavor, stability and sweetness characteristics in a variety of foodsystems," said Ted Ziemann, president of Cargill.

The companies began working together informally in May. Theready-to-drink formula is expected to be test marketed in the San Diego area inJanuary 2003.
