Sports Journal Takes on "Doping"

PHILADELPHIA--The Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine (www.cjsportmed.com)dedicated its July/August issue to the issue of drugs and performance-enhancingagents in athletes. The lead editorial by Andrew Pipe, M.D., and Thomas Best,M.D., Ph.D., notes that sports physicians have particular responsibilities inthis area. "It is no small privilege to be asked to provide care andcounsel for athletes," they wrote. Among the topics covered in the journalwere the use of stimulants in sports, including caffeine, over-the-counterstimulants and amphetamines; use of nutritional supplements; the"misuse" of the testosterone-producing hormone DHEA; and the use ofexogenous growth hormone.
