CanadianGovernment Promotes Folic Acid

OTTAWA--TheCanadian minister of health, Anne McLellan, launched a national awarenesscampaign in mid-March on the benefits of folic acid for decreasing birthdefects. In particular, the campaign highlights the importance of folic acid forpreventing neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. According to HealthCanada, 260 babies per year are born in Canada with neural tube defects. Thecampaign (www.healthcanada.ca/folicacid)includes national advertisements, posters and pamphlets directed at women ofchild-bearing age.
