MINNEAPOLISCargill Health& Food Technologies (H&FT) announced its OptaFlex chondroitin sulfateis self-affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe); an independent evaluationby an expert panel of scientists determined OptaFlex is safe for use in avariety of foods and beverages. The company also released a new, performancegrade OptaFlex ingredient that is 100 percent water soluble.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preventionpredicts by the year 2020, about 60 million people will be affected byarthritis, said Ted Ziemann, president of Cargill H&FT(www.cargillhft.com). GRAS status of OptaFlex chondroitin creates anadvantage for food and beverage manufacturers because they can now meet thegrowing consumer demand for joint health solutions.
