Drug Found in Troubled Companys Supplements

WASHINGTONThe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a publichealth advisory for certain Newton, N.J.-based NVE Inc. supplements found tocontain a prescription drug. The products involved are SIGRA, STAMINA Rx,STAMINA Rx for Women, Y-Y, Spontane ES and Uroprin. The products containedtadalafil, an active ingredient approved for use in Europe for erectiledysfunction. The drug may drastically lower blood pressure in those takingnitrates, medications used by people with diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemiaand ischemic heart disease. All of these conditions are also associated withsexual dysfunctionwhich raises the risk of adverse events in a nitrate usertaking an NVE supplement.

FDAs Office of Criminal Investigations, in collaboration with FDAs NewJersey and Atlanta districts, executed concurrent federal search warrants inGeorgia and New Jersey after finding the drug in the supplements.

NVE is already facing heat for another supplement: its Yellow Jackets ephedraproduct, which allegedly caused the death of a Lincoln, Ill., high schoolstudent last year. On May 30, 2003, the parents of the student filed a two-partcivil suit against the company.

NVE (www.stacker2.com) did not have acompany statement when called for comment.
