March 22, 2016
Ingredient Marketplace, April 27 through 29 at the Orlando World Center Marriott in Florida, will feature the latest ingredient information and formulation strategies in the nutrition, health, food & beverage and beauty markets. The event’s theme, “Mind of the Consumer," draws from innovative new research—prepared in conjunction with the Natural Marketing Institute (NMI)—to uncover the mysteries behind consumer demand. Along those lines, exhibitors are launching new ingredients that are designed to meet consumer demands.
Among the offerings being introduced at the show, BIO-CAT Microbials (Booth G44) is launching OPTI-BIOME™ Bacillus subtilis MB40, a highly concentrated, shelf-stable probiotic ingredient for dietary supplements and food products. It is self-affirmed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) via expert panel review and will be available for sampling and testing.
OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40 is a naturally occurring, spore-forming organism that protects itself from extreme pH and heat like the conditions associated with some food manufacturing processes. The proprietary strain can be encapsulated in a dietary supplement to provide a more diverse probiotic product and support label claims with impressive colony forming units (CFUs). Formulating with OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40 can raise and stabilize the CFU count of products.
Chris Schuler, BIO-CAT Microbials’ president, considers the product “the best of both worlds," as it minimizes the need to over-formulate due to concerns about the shelf life of first-generation products. In addition to dietary supplements, Schuler expects customers to begin developing more innovative food products containing probiotics, as OPTI-BIOME Bacillus subtilis MB40 has been shown to survive the extreme temperatures of some food manufacturing processes.
Probiotics will be a major focus of this year’s Ingredient Marketplace, with a one-day intensive Probiotics Marketplace scheduled for April 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.—the day before the Expo Hall opens. The full-day event will provide insight into what is driving consumer interest, scientific research and market opportunities around probiotics, as well as the “why" and “how" of developing finished products with probiotics. Separate registration is required and includes targeted education sessions and panel discussions from numerous experts, lunch, networking opportunities and poster presentations.
Also exhibiting at the show, ExcelVite (Booth N30) will showcase a range of newly developed palm carotenoid ingredients. Made from non-genetically modified organism (GMO), sustainably sourced Malaysian red palm oil, EVTene™ oil concentrate contains mainly alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and other carotenoids such as gamma-carotene and lycopene. EVTene has one of the highest levels of alpha-carotene compared to other commercial carotene sources in the market. Recommended for use as a natural yellow to orange food colorant, it is available in different forms, such as water-dispersible powder (EVTeneSol™), emulsion (EVTeneSem™) and beadlets (Alphabeads® / EVTeneBeads™) to cater to different product formulations.
These carotenoids products will be showcased, along with the company’s flagship tocotrienol ingredients EVNol™ and EVNol SupraBio™. All are produced according to GMP (good manufacturing practice) standards, are Non-GMO Project Verified, GRAS with no objection letter by the FDA, kosher and halal.
“Consumers are increasingly demanding transparency in their food and clean label. This means that they are doing a lot of research—about the products, about the environment, about nutrition and of course, they are now reading product labels," said Bryan See, regional product manager, ExcelVite Inc. USA. “We look forward to meeting with visitors at Ingredient Marketplace to discuss the science behind our flagship ingredients, as well as what we can do together to address this rising trend."
Another exhibitor, Grain Processing Corp., (GPC, Booth H32) offers premium MALTRIN® maltodextrins and specialty starches that provide functionality to a wide array of food, beverage and nutraceutical applications, including tablets, granulations, capsules, chews and films.
The company will be highlighting its INSTANT PURE-COTE® modified food starch, an excellent binder to help create the better-for-you snack solutions consumers are craving, such as no-sugar-added crunchy granola. INSTANT PURE-COTE starch replaces traditional syrups and provides adhesion to hold the granola clusters together while enhancing the crunchy texture, yielding a more-wholesome version that can be filled with fiber and not added sugar.
Considering the importance of consumer convenience, GPC will also demo a quick-dispersing dry mix beverage—a perfect solution for instantly transforming “powder in a pouch" into a refreshing drink by simply mixing it with water. With its neutral flavor profile, MALTRIN QD® (quick dispersing) maltodextrin allows immediate dispersion of the dry mix formula into water. Besides delivering a readily digestible carbohydrate source, MALTRIN QD maltodextrin provides enhanced body and mouthfeel to the beverage.
And finally, materials that are difficult to disperse may benefit from being combined with label-friendly, easy-to-use PURE-DENT® B730 modified food starch. A PURE-DENT® B730 absorbent starch plating demonstration will feature the use of B730 as a plating agent for various ingredients. The unique physical characteristics of PURE-DENT B730 make it ideal for carrying both oily and aqueous ingredients while maintaining free-flowing powder characteristics.
