NEW YORKSince it was first discovered in 1979, pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) has been a popular ingredient for heart health and cognitive function. Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Co. recently launched an information campaign around its BioPQQ®, noting the ingredient was successfully filed as a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) in accordance with FDA regulations in 2008.

Information required for an NDI filing includes safety testing and manufacturing specifications. FDA maintains a listing of all NDI notifications, and has further noted that manufacturers are responsible for ensuring their ingredients and products are in compliance with the law. Further, products containing an NDI that has not undergone FDA notification can be found to be adulterated.

Industry has developed several different tools to help manufacturers ensure their familiarity with NDIs. Earlier this month, the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) updated its online NDI database with information from 43 new notifications. And INSIDER's NDI Immersion Center offers the latest news and information on filings.
