Monsanto Plans Independence, Announces New Biotech Projects

ST. LOUIS--Monsanto Co. is in the process of spinning off intoan independent company, thereby dividing from Pharmacia Corp., according to aJuly 22 story that appeared in the Chicago Tribune (www.chicagotribune.com).Reportedly, Pfizer Inc. has proposed to buy Pharmacia, which should allowMonsanto to more readily refocus on biotechnology.

Monsanto has two new biotech projects in the pipeline, according to the Tribune.The first is to splice a gene from algae into canola oil, which will reportedlycreate a canola oil high in heart-healthy omega-3s without the fishy taste.Monsanto's second project is to insert amino acids into soybeans and corn for"ideal" animal feed, according to the Tribune.
