WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.Some Garcinia cambogia supplements contain less than a fifth of the advertised amount of hydroxycitric acid (HCA), according to a new report by ConsumerLab.com. For its most recent analysis, Garcinia Cambogia (HCA) Supplement Review, the independent third-party company tested 11 garcinia extract supplements and tested them for the plant's crucial compound HCA.

According to ConsumerLab's tests, six of the supplements contained less than the advertised amount of HCA, ranging from 16 to 81 percent. The two products with the lowest percentages also "appeared to be promoting false endorsement by Dr. Oz," the company said.

"Garcinia cambogia extract may have a modest benefit in weight management, but most products on the market don't actually deliver what's listed on their labels," said Tod Cooperman, M.D., president of ConsumerLab.com.

Typical daily doses range from 900 to 1,500 mg of HCA. Among the five passing products, obtaining 1,500 mg of HCA cost between 74 cents and $2.08.

ConsumerLab.com has tested a wide range of dietary supplements, including eye health, omega-3s, lycopene, green tea and milk thistle.
