Phase 2 Effective for Weight Loss

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.Phase 2, a starch neutralizing white kidney beanextract from Kearny, N.J.-based Pharmachem Laboratories Inc., may effectivelyreduce weight and lower triglyceride levels in obese adults, according to astudy published in Alternative Medicine Review (9, 1:63-9, 2004) (www.alternativemedicinereview.com).

During the randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial, 50 obeseadults (with an average age of 37, and average weight of 193 lbs.) receivedeither Phase 2 or placebo for eight weeks; 27 subjects completed the trial.

Researchers saw a greater weight loss (an average of 3.79 pounds) in thegroup receiving Phase 2 compared to the control group (an average of 1.65pounds). The kidney bean extract also lowered triglyceride levels by an averageof 26 mg/dLmore than three times the reduction observed in the placebo group. The researchers concluded Phase 2 may be a potential adjunct therapy in treatingobesity and hypertriglyceridemia, although further studies with larger number ofsubjects are warranted to conclusively demonstrate effectiveness.
