Inflammation management market trends show opportunities for supplements
The market for inflammation management supplements is a patchwork of promising ingredient- and condition-specific opportunity areas.
Unlike other health condition categories of dietary supplements, inflammation is an underlying mechanism in many health conditions, from post-exercise soreness to chronic autoimmune diseases and joint problems. Assessing the market for inflammation management products, then, requires a consideration of the many health condition segments as well as the markets for individual ingredients that primarily act by attenuating inflammatory response.
The recent picture is mixed. The joint health market is up and down, while the inflammatory drug and therapeutics market is booming. Joint ingredient staples like glucosamine and chondroitin have fallen in recent years, while rising stars like curcumin have enjoyed big growth. Other bright spots include vitamin D and sports recovery formulations, while omega-3 fatty acids are still very much a big player.
Areas of opportunity include food and skin care applications, as well as the surging cannabidiol (CBD) market, which is buzz-worthy despite the limitations presented by a delay in FDA’s decision on a potential pathway for the widely popular hemp derivative that faces an unfortunate drug-first exclusion.
